Inspired Learning Opportunities

One of the primary aspects of the mission of the Tan Seva Project is to provide and facilitate inspired learning opportunities to deepen the practices of caregivers, as a means of promoting the action of turning toward the sacred aspects of dying. These inspired learning opportunities are also meant to bring innovative tools to the licensed and unlicensed caregiver via community discussions on and explorations of the transformative end-of-life process.
The theme for the 2007 series of inspired learning opportunities is “The Beloved Community”, a concept defined and explored by Dr. Martin Luther King, and suggested as a theme by Dr. Charles Garfield. As the Tan Seva Project began collaborating with both the Sigma Theta Tau Leadership Academy and Dr. Garfield, the idea of using the theme of The Beloved Community seemed an ideal support for initiating community explorations of the caregiver in relationship with the end-of-life process. Questions and dialogue starters began to surface: How does the idea of the Beloved Community express itself as a call for compassionate community in service to the end-of-life process? How does the Beloved Community care for itself? What does the Beloved Community do to sustain itself and foster a bridge toward the future? What unfolded from these questions was Tan Seva Project’s first series of inspired learning opportunities, held in Arcata, California.
Below you will find descriptions of upcoming inspired learning opportunities, as well as links for printable registration forms. The Tan Seva project aims to offer these opportunities year-round, so please continue to check this page for updates and more information on upcoming events.

THE GIFTS OF GRIEF: Learning From Our Experiences of Loss
with Charles A. Garfield, Ph.D.

Grief can be a time of growth and transformation. However, too often care of the bereaved focuses only on managing immediate crises and making the best of a bad situation. Consequently, too many of us go through the grief process anxious, depressed, or in denial.

Working together, we can learn how the experience of loss can include blessings as well as burdens. Health professionals, clergy, family caregivers, volunteers – and in fact all of us – can benefit from learning

  1. how to identify and support the profound inner changes that can occur during times of grieving
  2. how examining and integrating our own experiences of loss can enhance our ability to care for others.

This workshop with Dr. Garfield, one of our nation’s leaders in the care of the dying and bereaved, will allow participants to share their stories and re-examine their experiences of loss in the company of kindred spirits from inside and outside the health care community.
